Breakout

I am writing 2026-27 from two things: a desk call on the team, and the Stars Lab outlook bands on the skaters.

Team: 105 points. Second in the Central. That is my pin, not a warehouse sim table. Public boards cluster us in the low-to-mid 100s. Colorado still owns the division ceiling. Minnesota and Utah sit in the neighborhood.

Skaters: live heuristic pace bands from rates, usage, and age. Explicit: not a trained projection model. 84-game slate. Argue after twenty games. Opener is Blues at AAC. Still 0 GP.

How to read this

Question: where do the Stars land if jobs stick and health is normal?

Team method: desk call. I own 105 / Central 2. Clear 110 and take the division = upside. Hang around 95 = something broke.

Player method: Stars Lab outlook. Rates blended with age-at-season, usage, and a GP envelope. You get a band, not a fake pin. Where I pick a side inside the band, I say so. Cap Sheet / fair AAV is a separate card. Night Clear starts after the horn.

Drivers I care about: even-strength shot volume (last year special teams and structure carried a lot of the 112), Otter not living soft for months, Hintz and Seguin availability, and a blue line that can score when the top six stalls.

Bands from Stars Lab outlook as of opener week. Mid tick on the chart is the band midpoint. My desk lean sits in the prose.

Jason Robertson — GP 72–84 · G 35–47 · A 42–55 · P 77–102

Shooter. Last year 45-51-96 in 82. Outlook says top-six, high confidence, peak ages, improving. Desk lean near the middle of the points band (~90). Checkpoint: 3+ shots a night through ten games. One-year deal. Same gold need. If the shot dies, last year's heater was the story.

Wyatt Johnston — GP 72–84 · G 38–51 · A 35–47 · P 73–98

Young riser. Outlook weights the latest year. Last year 45-41-86. Desk lean high-80s. I want even-strength drive, not power-play guest minutes. Split him from Robo at 5-on-5 when you can.

Mikko Rantanen — GP 72–84 · G 22–31 · A 57–73 · P 79–104

I still take Mikko. Outlook: top-six, peak, points band starts at 79. Health is half the card. Last year 64 GP · 77 P. Play a full slate at that rate and you are already in the high 90s. Shot back toward three a night is the October read.

Roope Hintz — GP 72–84 · G 18–27 · A 37–49 · P 55–76

Quiet unlock. Outlook middle-six, points 55–76 — higher than a scared health pin. Last year 53 GP · 44 P. Two-time 70-point guy when he dresses a full season. Healthy months and the low end of the band is the floor. In and out again and Central 2 gets harder.

Miro Heiskanen — GP 72–84 · G 6–13 · A 45–59 · P 51–72

Blue-line spine. Outlook top-four, points 51–72. Last year 63 P in 77. Not asking for goals. Asking for exits when the ice shrinks. If the point share dips because he is chasing breaks, the desk feels it.

Thomas Harley — GP 56–80 · G 2–11 · A 22–39 · P 24–50

Breakout card

Thomas Harley

GP 56–80 · G 2–11 · A 22–39 · P 24–50 · desk over ~45

~45

Breakout. Outlook band is wide (24–50) with a declining YoY tag after 36 P in 70 (down from 50 the year before). Top-four usage still. Desk take: the over — toward the top of the band (~45). Second pair that can run a look, shoot from the blue, clear a night when forwards stall. Preseason put two goals on the sheet. That is tape, not a clear. Test: scored nights in October and whether Gulutzan keeps feeding him the puck in the zone. Quiet low-30s and I ate the take.

Matt Duchene — GP 56–80 · G 12–25 · A 24–43 · P 36–68

Veteran fade tag. Middle-six. Age is real. Outlook still gives a usable points band. Desk wants games more than a heater. If he slides, Hintz and Seguin cover more.

Tyler Seguin — GP 56–80 · G 13–26 · A 19–34 · P 32–60

Availability bet. Medium confidence. ACL year. May miss the opener. Outlook band assumes he dresses enough. Fourteen preseason minutes proved he can dress. They did not clear a deal. Healthy months next to Hintz change the middle. Another LTIR movie and scratch the card.

Jamie Benn — GP 56–80 · G 10–23 · A 15–30 · P 25–53

Captain minutes. Net-front. Outlook bottom-six / depth on current minutes. Right jobs over nostalgia boxcars.

Esa Lindell — GP 56–80 · G 2–9 · A 15–27 · P 17–36

Stay-at-home next to Miro. Points are not the story. Minutes and goals against when he is on are.

Crease

Jake Oettinger: outlook starter, GP 49–64, SV% band .895–.911, blended near .899. High confidence. Soft stretch for a quarter and 105 gets heavy. Casey DeSmith remains the 1B who already showed a full sixty.

Breakout decision rule

Harley.

Johnston is already a riser on the outlook card. Robo and Mikko are the paycheck fight. Hintz is a health bounce into a 55–76 band. Harley is the one where the desk disagrees with a fade tag: wide band, top-four minutes, I take the over. Watch the first twenty. Top half of 24–50 + pairing holds = breakout. Stuck near the floor = I ate it.

What would break the board

  • Pace under 100 while Colorado runs away
  • Otter soft for a quarter (under the SV% band for months)
  • Hintz and Seguin both missing
  • Harley quiet at the floor of 24–50
  • Another early exit after a fat regular season

Desk call

105. Band 100–108. Central 2. Skater story from Stars Lab heuristic bands. Harley the over inside 24–50. Seguin the availability bet. Otter the night-to-night hinge.

Open the board. Open the player outlook cards. Argue with 105 after twenty games, not after one period.
